Mifuko Trust is collaborating with Little Sun with a campaign taking place from 15.7.-15.8. During the campaign, Little Sun’s solar lamps will be collected through the webshops of the two companies to Machakos, Kenya. For every solar lamp bought from Little Sun’s web shop and for every 20 euros spent in Mifuko’s web shop, one solar lamp will go to a woman working in Mifuko female self-help groups. Little Sun is a German based global project which aims to bring clean and affordable energy to the 1,1 billion people in the world living off-grid. Little Sun’s product, a handy solar lamp which you can hang around your neck, offers 5 hours of bright light or 10 hours of soft light with 4 hours of charging in the sun. Access to clean light and energy are key to human existence, and its lack can affect the structure of entire communities. Education levels drop as children cannot study after sunset. Working hours are limited to daytime and income is reduced. Medical care, such as delivering babies at night, becomes more dangerous to provide. The quality of time together cooking and socialising is compromised.

Mifuko’s artisan women are part of those 1,1 billion people that live without electricity. The aim of the campaign is to provide them with Little Sun’s lamps so that they will be able to work also in early evening hours and earn extra income. The children will also benefit from the lamps since they will be able to do their homework in the evening. Money will be saved and health protected too when kerosene – the toxic and expensive fuel commonly used in the area for lighting – won’t have to be bought.
