Building dry toilets and planting trees in Kenya

Mifuko Trust received funding from the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the second phase of the WASH and Grow! - Green Growth in Kenya project for the period 2023-2026. The project's mission is highly relevant globally. The challenges posed by climate change to smallholder household farming, such as prolonged droughts and floods, and the rising cost of fertilizer, are major challenges also in the semi-arid Makueni region.

The war in Ukraine has also highlighted the dependence of African countries on food imports from Ukraine and Russia and the need to develop regional food security.

The WASH and Grow! project will continue to promote ecological sanitation in partnership with the local health administration and train sanitation ambassadors.  Ecological sanitation improves hygiene conditions by preventing disease and provides low-cost and ecological fertilizer for smallholder farms. With the new funding, the project will expand its activities in the area of promoting regenerative agriculture.

The project will train "agroforestry ambassadors" and set up model plantations where trees improve the soil and microclimate. Trees, such as fruit trees, sequester carbon in the soil and also produce food.
