MIFUKO STORIES

Mifuko is a proud member of World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO), the highly regarded global community of social enterprises that practice Fair Trade. WFTO members must demonstrate they put people and the planet first, adhering to the WFTO Fair Trade Principles.

Mifuko is a proud member of the WFTO, a respected network of social enterprises engaged in fair trade. Its members must demonstrate that they put people and the planet first, and that they adhere to fair trade principles.

WFTO's Guarantee System ensures that a company adheres to fair trade principles and meets the criteria of a social enterprise. The company puts the interests of producers first and has a clear social mission. All this must be reflected in the company's structures, business model, operations and supply chains. The WFTO Guarantee System therefore assesses the whole business - not just a specific product, ingredient or supply chain.

Compliance with Fair Trade principles is assessed through extensive self-assessments, peer visits and external audits. Companies that meet the requirements are awarded the "Guaranteed Fair Trade" label to show that their products have been produced in accordance with Fair Trade principles.

Mifuko Trust

Mifuko Trust was founded to tackle poverty and increase the well-being of our artisans.

Depending on the size of the basket and the experience of the artisan it takes between half a day and two days to weave a basket. Once the basket is complete, the ends of the baskets are trimmed with scissors, which have also been donated to the artisans by the Finnish homeware company Fiskars. Each basket is marked with the name of the artisan who weaved it, and its journey from the warehouse to Finland and from there to resellers and into the customers’ homes begins.

The Finnish and Kenyan project managers, Peter Manyolo and Anita Lintula, took up the challenge in late 2021 and applied for funding from Fingo Powerbank to create community-based innovations. Community-led innovation is about ordinary people developing and testing solutions that benefit the whole community. Together with Butterfly Works, a Dutch organisation, Fingo Powerbank trained the applicant organisations with co-creation with the users of the product in design thinking methods.
