Sowing Equality

About

Sowing Equality is a project that integrates gender-transformative approaches intoclimate-smart agriculture in rural Kenya. By promoting inclusive farming practices, it strengthens food security, livelihoods, and climate resilience while supporting environmental conservation. The project directly benefits 8,000 people in Makueni County, empowering communities to build a more sustainable and equitable future. The project is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and private donors. Beneficiaries also contribute to the costs through work and money.

The project is implemented by Mifuko Trust in close collaboration with partners such as the Mifuko Women Development Community-Based Organization (a grassroots-level women's organization) and local government officials. It benefits from expertise provided by the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) on gender-transformative approaches to land restoration.

Collaboration and knowledge exchange at the county level, as well as with other NGOs and stakeholders, will amplify the impact of efforts. Mifuko Trust’s "sister organisation", Mifuko Ltd. supports the project with its infrastructure and volunteer input in Kenya and in Finland. The women’s groups playing a central role in the project also produce baskets for Mifuko; thus, corporate responsibility forms the basis of the project and contributes to its effectiveness and
sustainability.

Aid to environment

Through the empowerment of 60 women groups and their families via training in climate-smart agricultural practices, covering topics such as water and soil management, green energy alternatives, and gender and social inclusion, the project catalyzes economic, social, and environmental empowerment among farmers and their respective communities. The communities will experience improvements in food security, livelihoods, and resilience to
climate-related challenges. By adopting a gender-transformative and socially inclusive methodology in climate-smart agriculture, the project recognizes the importance of engaging all community members, also the easily marginalized ones, to achieve enduring and holistic outcomes.

Improving Gender Equality

We are committed to advancing gender equality through a gender-transformative approach. This means we go beyond simply addressing barriers or focusing only on women—we work to change deep-rooted structural inequalities and harmful gender norms that often dictate who can perform certain jobs, control resources, and make key decisions.

Recognizing gender and social inclusion is essential for sustainable progress. As we move forward, we will continue this transformative approach, ensuring that women, men, and marginalized groups have equal opportunities to participate and benefit from the project and contribute equally to the society.

To further empower the youth in Kenya, we will provide training in advocacy and communications, equipping young people with the skills to amplify their voices, influence decision-making, and drive positive change in their communities.
