Fast fashion and fast home décor are trends we hope will come to an end. We make handmade, high-quality products designed to serve their purpose for a long time. All Mifuko products are handmade, and the materials we use and their origins are presented individually on this page. We work directly with material suppliers and artisan groups, which supports traceability throughout the production chain.
Our climate-related work has two parts: Mifuko measures greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain in accordance with the GHG Protocol and uses the results to target emissions reduction measures, while Mifuko Trust carries out projects that support adaptation to climate change in rural communities.
Environmental responsibility
Working with our suppliers, we aim to optimise transport routes and align material purchases with production volumes to avoid buying excess materials. We also aim to improve the quality of the materials we purchase so that as much of each material as possible can be used. For example, the proportion of purchased leather that ended up as cutting waste fell from around 25% in 2024 to 20% in 2025.
All of Punonta’s current suppliers have signed an agreement that includes WFTO requirements and payment terms. Most members of the self-help groups are also smallholder farmers. Income from farming and harvesting also stays within the local economy.
Contribute to climate action
Our climate-related work has two parts. Mifuko Trust, in turn, carries out projects that aim to support rural communities in adapting to the effects of climate change. These projects provide communities with training in areas such as new farming methods and agroforestry.
All Mifuko products are handmade. When selecting materials, we consider their environmental characteristics alongside the requirements of their intended purpose and long-term use. Social Impact
Mifuko’s business model supports women’s livelihoods in rural Africa through long-term trading partnerships with artisans. These partnerships are built around local self-help groups, where women earn an income through their skills, save money, share experiences and keep traditional craft skills alive.
Artisans interviewed in Kenya report using their weaving income to cover their families’ basic needs, pay children’s school fees, improve their homes and develop their farming activities and small businesses. The groups also provide loans to members in need, enabling them to invest in their families’ wellbeing or small businesses.

Economic impact
In Kenya, climate change has led to recurring droughts. As a result, farming, traditionally the main source of income, no longer provides a reliable basis for a stable livelihood. The income our artisans earn from weaving Mifuko baskets helps safeguard their families’ livelihoods when crops can no longer provide that security.
