As each basket is handmade the size and shape may vary.
Mifuko Kiondo baskets are folded for transport to save space. You can shape the basket by spraying it lightly with water and then shaping it by hand. See the care instructions for more information.
How a kiondo basket is made
Weaving starts by crossing two long strands of twine with two other long strands.
It takes between half a day to two days for the artisan to weave a basket.
When the basket is complete, the surface is trimmed with scissors.
Finally, the artisan writes her name on the product tag.

The story of two friends
Mifuko was founded in 2009 by two Finnish designers, Minna and Mari. The idea for Mifuko was born at a market in Nairobi, Kenya, where Kiondo basket weaving is a traditional craft. Minna and Mari were amazed by the craftsmanship of local artisans and wanted to share it with a wider audience.
Mifuko was founded with a clear objective: to combine Nordic design and traditional African handicraft into a business that directly benefits rural Kenyan women and their communities. In Swahili, “mifuko” means pocket, and we make sure that no one's pocket is left empty.
Radically sustainable
We at Mifuko have been radically sustainable from the beginning, striving for sustainability in everything we do. We are determined to be a part of building
a better, sustainable future. We want to contribute to solving the issues humanity faces, such as poverty, gender inequality, pollution, and loss of biodiversity.
