What is Mifuko?
Mifuko is a Finnish design company with a mission to bring joy to customers while improving the welfare of women in rural Africa. Mifuko baskets, bags and home décor products are made by 1,000 artisans, mostly women, in rural Kenya and Ghana, and sold in over 30 countries.
Who makes Mifuko products?
All Mifuko products are handmade by skilled artisans, mostly women, in rural Kenya and Ghana. Each product is signed by the artisan who made it. Mifuko works with 1,000 artisans, the majority of whom are women from economically disadvantaged communities.
Where are Mifuko products made?

What certifications does Mifuko hold?

How does Mifuko ensure fair wages for artisans?
As a WFTO member, Mifuko is committed to paying fair wages that meet or exceed local fair wage benchmarks. Mifuko regularly visits artisan groups to discuss welfare, working conditions and capacity building.
How many artisans does Mifuko work with?

What is a Kiondo basket?
A Kiondo is a traditional Kenyan woven basket. Mifuko's Kiondo baskets combine this African craft tradition with Scandinavian design to create beautiful, functional and sustainable products. Each one is handwoven and signed by its maker.
What is the difference between the Kiondo and other Mifuko basket styles?
The Kiondo is Mifuko's signature style, a traditional Kenyan round woven basket with a wide opening and sturdy base. Other styles include the shopper tote (with handles for carrying), the oval tote from Ghana called Bolga (a more structured bag shape) and the market basket called Iringa. Each style is handwoven and available in various sizes and materials.
What materials are Mifuko products made from?
Mifuko products are made from a variety of natural and sustainable materials including sisal, FSC certified paper twine, foodgrade plastic, Surplus wool from the carpet industry and banana fibre, a by-product of banana farming. Handles and straps are made from locally sourced, vegetable tanned leather.
What is sisal?
Sisal is a natural plant fibre derived from the agave plant. It is strong, durable and biodegradable. Mifuko uses sisal as a key material in many of its baskets and bags.
What is FSC certified paper twine?
Paper twine is a twisted cord made from paper. FSC certification means the paper comes from responsibly managed forests, protecting the environment, wildlife and the rights of workers and local communities.
What is vegetable tanned leather?
Vegetable tanning is a traditional leather tanning process using natural tannins from tree bark, leaves and branches, a more environmentally friendly process than chrome tanning. The leather handles on Mifuko products are locally sourced in Kenya and vegetable tanned.
Are Mifuko products vegan?
Most Mifuko bags and baskets feature leather handles or straps, so they are not vegan. If you are looking for a product without leather, please visit our website to browse the full product range and filter by material.

Can children use Mifuko baskets safely?
Yes, Mifuko baskets are safe for use around children, for example as toy storage. As with all home accessories, adult supervision is recommended for young children. The baskets do not contain small detachable parts.
Is sisal suitable for people with allergies?

Use, Care and Sustainability
What is the lifespan of a Mifuko product?
Mifuko products are designed to last for many years with proper care. Natural fibres such as sisal are highly durable, and the vegetable tanned leather handles strengthen with use. The lifespan depends on how the product is used and cared for. Follow our care instructions to get the most out of your Mifuko product.
Can I wash my Mifuko basket or bag?
Do not machine wash sisal or paper twine baskets and bags. To clean, gently dab stains with a slightly damp cloth, do not rub or soak. Plastic Mifuko baskets are an exception and can be rinsed with water. Always allow your basket to dry thoroughly after any contact with moisture.
What happens if my Mifuko basket or bag gets wet?
If your basket or bag gets wet, empty it immediately and allow it to dry thoroughly in a well ventilated area. Do not place it near direct heat sources such as radiators. Shape the basket gently while it is still slightly damp if needed. Avoid leaving it wet for extended periods to prevent any fibre damage.
How do I care for a paper bag?
Keep paper bags dry and away from prolonged moisture. Clean gently with a dry or very slightly damp cloth. Do not machine wash or soak. Store in a dry place.
How do I store my Mifuko basket when not in use?
Mifuko baskets can be folded flat and stacked when not in use, great for saving space. Store in a dry, well ventilated area away from direct sunlight and moisture.
Can I use my Mifuko basket outdoors?
Yes. Kiondo baskets can handle light moisture. For outdoor use, place in a covered area, such as a balcony under an eave, to avoid direct rain. Always allow the basket to dry fully if it gets wet.
Are Mifuko products UV resistant?
Natural fibre products such as sisal and paper twine may fade slightly with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as is natural with organic materials. For long term outdoor use, we recommend placing your Mifuko basket in a shaded or covered area to preserve its colour and durability.
Can I use a Mifuko basket as a plant basket?
Yes, Mifuko baskets make beautiful plant baskets. Place a saucer inside before adding the plant pot to protect the basket from water. A covered spot outdoors or indoors works best.
What basket works best for plants?
Any Mifuko Kiondo in M, L or XL works beautifully as a plant basket. Remember to place a saucer inside to protect from water.
What Mifuko bag is best for everyday use?
For everyday use, we recommend the M or L shoulder bag or tote. For a lighter, more compact option, the XS or S shoulder bag is a great choice.
What Mifuko product is best for the beach?
The Kiondo shopper in M or L is perfect for the beach, spacious, lightweight and durable. Sisal and paper twine handle a little moisture well.
What basket is best for storing toys?
L, XL or XXL floor baskets are ideal for storing toys, they are large, sturdy and stylish.
How can I recycle my Mifuko product?
Mifuko provides recycling instructions on their website. Natural fibre products such as sisal and paper can generally be composted or disposed of as natural waste. Check the recycling instructions page for material specific guidance.
Is Mifuko packaging recyclable?

Orders and Payment
Do I need to create an account to place an order?
No, you can place an order as a guest on the Mifuko website without creating an account. Creating an account is optional but makes it easier to track orders and manage your details for future purchases.
Can I cancel or change my order?
If your order has not yet been dispatched, changes may be possible. Once dispatched, changes cannot be made. Please reach out to the Mifuko team via email hello[at]mifuko.fi as soon as possible to request changes.
Can I change my delivery address after placing an order?
If your order has not yet been dispatched, an address change may be possible. Please email hello[at]mifuko.fi as soon as possible with your order number and the new address. Once an order has been dispatched, the delivery address cannot be changed.
What payment methods are accepted?
Mifuko accepts Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, UnionPay, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay, MobilePay, iDEAL and Bancontact. All payments are processed in Euro (EUR).
Can I pay in instalments?
Klarna instalment payment is available in selected countries including Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands. If Klarna is available in your country, it will appear as a payment option at checkout.
I have a discount code, where do I enter it?
You can enter your discount code in the shopping cart before proceeding to checkout. Look for the discount code field in the cart and type or paste your code there.
I signed up for the newsletter but did not receive the discount code, what is it?
If you signed up for the Mifuko newsletter, you should have received a 10% welcome discount code. You can enter code directly in the shopping cart at checkout. If you have any issues applying it, please let us know via email hello[at]mifuko.fi and also check your junk mail, sometimes it emails end up there.
Is it safe to pay on the Mifuko website?
Yes, the Mifuko website uses secure, encrypted payment processing. All major payment methods are processed through trusted payment providers. Mifuko does not store your card details.
Does Mifuko offer gift cards?

Shipping and Delivery
Do you offer free shipping and from what order value?
Yes. Free shipping applies from the following order values: In Finland, Germany and the EU: free delivery on orders over €100 (otherwise €4.90 in Finland and €9.90 in other EU countries). Outside EU, free over €300 (otherwise €25).
How do I track my order?
Once your order is dispatched, you will receive a tracking code by email to follow your delivery in real time.
What should I do if my order is lost in transit?
If your order has not arrived within the expected delivery timeframe, please first check the tracking information in your dispatch confirmation email. If the tracking shows no movement or the parcel appears lost, please contact Mifuko at hello[at]mifuko.fi and we will investigate with the carrier.
Can I pick up my order?
Yes, you can collect your order from the Mifuko warehouse in Joensuu on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 and 16:00. Please arrange this in advance by email at hello[at]mifuko.fi. You can also choose a pick up point (such as GLS, Matkahuolto or Posti) at checkout for delivery to a location convenient for you.
Can I pick up my order from the Mifuko showroom in Helsinki?
Unfortunately, pick up from the Helsinki showroom is not possible as our warehouse is located in Joensuu, from where all orders are dispatched. However, you can select a convenient pick up point at checkout, for example a GLS, Matkahuolto or Posti pick up location near you.
Returns and Refunds
How do I return a product?
You have 14 days from receiving your order to let us know if you want to return it. Here is how to return: 1) Within 14 days of receiving your order, send an email with your order number to hello[at]mifuko.fi to notify us of the return. 2) Pack the products carefully so they are not damaged in transit. We recommend using the original packaging, and all accessories and parts should be returned with the product. Please include your name, address and the original packing slip. You may handle the products as you would in a shop to check them. If a product has been used beyond that, you may be liable for any reduction in its value. 3) Send the package back within 14 days of your return notification. In Finland, returns are made with our Matkahuolto return code, and in other EU countries with the GLS return label we send you. The return shipping cost (€10 with the Matkahuolto return code, €15 with the GLS return label) is deducted from your refund, unless the product is faulty or there has been an error on our part. We refund the product price and the original shipping cost to your original payment method within 14 days of your return notification. We may withhold the refund until we have received the returned products or you have shown proof that you have sent them.
What are the return rules if I am in an EU country outside Finland?
You have the right to return products within 14 calendar days of receipt, no reason needed. Email hello[at]mifuko.fi within 14 days with your order number, and we will send you a GLS return label. Print the label, attach it to the package and take it to a GLS point. Please pack the products carefully, preferably in the original packaging, and include the original packing slip. You may handle the products as you would in a shop to check them. If a product has been used beyond that, you may be liable for any reduction in its value. Send the return within 14 days of your return notification. We refund the product price and the original shipping cost to your original payment method within 14 days of your return notification, minus the €15 return shipping cost for the GLS label. We may withhold the refund until we have received the returned products or you have shown proof that you have sent them. If the product is faulty, we cover the return shipping cost.

I want to exchange a product for a different size, how does this work?
Mifuko does not offer direct exchanges. To get a different size or product, please return the original item following our return instructions, and place a new order for the product you want. If your original order included a discount code, contact us at hello[at]mifuko.fi after placing the new order and we will apply the same discount to your new purchase.
I returned my package before receiving the return label, will I still get a refund?
If you have already sent the package back to us before receiving a return label, please let us know by email at hello[at]mifuko.fi with your order details. If the package arrives at our warehouse, we will process the refund as soon as possible. If the package is returned to you, you can then use the return label we provide to send it back.
When will I receive my refund?
Your refund is made to your original payment method within 14 days of your return notification. We may withhold the refund until we have received the returned products or you have shown proof that you have sent them. The return shipping cost (€10 with our Matkahuolto return code in Finland, €15 with our GLS return label in other EU countries) is deducted from the refund.
What happens if I do not pick up my order?
If a package is returned to us because it was not delivered or picked up, and you have not informed us about the return before it arrives, we may deduct the shipping costs for the returned package from your refund: €10 for deliveries to Finland and €15 for deliveries to other countries. We cannot reship orders that are returned to us as undeliverable, but you are welcome to place a new order on our website.
Can I return a lamp shade or decorative item?
Yes, Mifuko home décor items such as lamp shades and ornaments can be returned within 14 days of receipt. Please pack them carefully, preferably in the original packaging, and follow the standard return instructions on our website.
What if my product is defective or damaged?
If you receive a defective or damaged product, please notify Mifuko as soon as possible at hello[at]mifuko.fi. In the case of a confirmed defect, Mifuko will cover return shipping costs and will replace or refund the product.

I am a business, how can I order corporate gifts?
Mifuko offers beautiful corporate gifts for employees and business partners. You can place your order in the Mifuko web shop and add 'Company gift order' in the order notes. The minimum order is €450 (reseller prices). Gift wrap, shipping within Finland and a printed greeting card are included for individual packages within Finland. What corporate gift products does Mifuko recommend?

Can I support the Mifuko Trust through a corporate gift?
Yes. If you prefer a non material gift, you can donate to a Mifuko Trust project, for example supporting the construction of an ecological dry toilet that promotes sanitation in rural Kenya. Is gift wrapping available?
Gift wrapping is included for corporate gift orders shipped individually within Finland, with an extra fee for larger orders. Ornaments are packed in gift boxes when you order sets.
